USS Kidd covering thousands of miles in search

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Crews aboard the San Diego-based USS Kidd are part of an international effort to find the missing plane.

Officials have expanded the search thousands of miles into the Indian Ocean. On average, the USS Kidd covers around 1,500 square miles every day.

But the missile destroyer's crew faces a number of challenges.

"The waters are highly congested with fishing and commercial vessels. We find a lot of material in the water, whether it is fishing buoys or other trash or debris but nothing that would lead us to believe it was associated with the missing airliner," USS Kidd Commander TJ Zerr said.

Locally-based ship the USS Pinckney was also aiding the search but was called off for scheduled maintenance.
