Taxi driver hit and killed after wrong way crash

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The family of a taxi driver killed in a hit-and-run on a local freeway mourns his loss, as investigators work to determine what happened.

The California Highway Patrol reported that cab driver, identified by family 42-year-old Anteneh Minassie, was on Interstate 5 heading south between Old Town Avenue and Washington Street when a wrong way driver came toward him heading north just before 2:30 a.m. Minassie was thrown from his car, but CHP reported he died when he was run over on the interstate by multiple vehicles. His cab was sent down an embankment when it was hit by the driver inside of a white Honda. The female driver, in her forties, who first caused the wreck, had fled the scene. However, she was arrested by 10:30 a.m. on suspicion of driving under the influence.

At Minassie’s Jamacha house, dozens of his fellow cab drivers showed up to pay their respects to his grieving family. He had come to America eight years ago to start a new life with his wife and children and his pastor says he was active in the local Ethiopian community. His pastor says the 42-year-old was a loving father to his three children and a great friend to many - before he was killed.

The investigation is underway and authorities are searching for any additional vehicles that were involved in this incident.

Anyone with information in this case, is asked to call the California Highway Patrol.
