Good Samaritans come to the aid of a gunshot victim

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A Good Samaritan came to the aid of a man lying in the street with a gunshot wound to his head. The 23-year-old victim is now recovering at Sharp Memorial Hospital.

Police were called to the 3200 block of Atlas Street just before 10:30 p.m. Saturday, after neighbors say they heard a loud pop.

Long time Claremont Mesa resident Tina Merchant will be the first to tell you that our neighborhood is tight.

“We watch out for our neighbors here,” Merchant explained.

So when she and her son Daniel Begley heard what sounded like a loud pop, they quickly sprung into action.

“Cause I was like I don't know if it’s my car, neighbors’ cars, but I'm going to go out and investigate,” said Merchant.

The mother and son found a 23-year-old man who had been shot in the head lying in his own blood on the sidewalk.

“As I got closer, I realized there was a man down. I screamed out hey is there anyone out here. There's no sounds,” Merchant added.

Unsure if the suspect was still nearby, Begley and his mom slowly approached the unconscious man and did what any Good Samaritan would do.

“I come to the victim and he's lying right here. I tell mom to call 911,” said Begley. “I kept telling him stay calm stay calm keeping breathing don't stop breathing on me they're coming they are on their way be alright keep breathing.”

The pair stayed with the Chula Vista man until police and ambulance arrived. With very little details to go on, authorities canvased the neighborhood Saturday night in hopes of finding the shooter. They found shell casings in some grass.

Begley and Merchant say had it not been for the car sensor alarm sound, they may not have ventured across the street to check on Begley's work truck. And, there is no telling what could have happened had they not responded when they did.

“Five minutes into the 911, I looked up and realized we were the only two standing out there and that if we had not gone out we could have potentially found this man dead in the morning,” said Merchant.
