Student threatens parents, triggers SWAT standoff

Posted: Updated:

MIRA MESA (CBS 8) - An 18-year-old student has been hospitalized and is undergoing a psychological evaluation after allegedly threatening her parents with a knife.

The incident triggered a standoff that lasted several hours in Mira Mesa Tuesday evening. Authorities say the standoff started around 5:30 p.m. with an argument at a home in the 9000 block of Clover Circle. Officers initially responded to the address after a call that reported a volatile situation.

During the argument, the student, a senior at Scripps Ranch High School, reportedly pulled a knife on her parents. They ran out of the house and warned officers that there were other weapons were inside.

SWAT teams surrounded the area, but were careful not to escalate the situation.

"We went very slowly on this," said Lt. Mark Bennett with the San Diego Police Department. "We didn't want to force any kind of confrontation. We wanted to negotiate with her. We wanted to get her out of the house peacefully and it took some time, took some effort, but it was worth it in the end."

Negotiators talked the teen into surrendering peacefully. At this point, it's not clear what started the argument.
