More room to ride at giant new skate park in East County

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Skateboarders in the East County now have another park to ride in.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Friday for the grand opening of a 16,000-square-foot skate park at Lindo Lake County Park.

After years of dreaming, designing and developing, Lakeside now has its own state-of-the-art skate park. This dream come true provides a sorely needed collective spot for boarders to break out their moves.

"It's cool to have something here. Now we don't have to go far away," a skater said.

With plenty of space for skaters of all ages, and their spectators, the park -- the first of its kind in unincorporated San Diego County -- has been in the works since 2009.

"This is a homegrown project," County Supervisor Dianne Jacob said.

Jacob helped in securing the $624,000 needed to make the recreational dream a reality.

"This is an investment in our kids' future," she said.

It's an investment that the Tony Hawk Foundation, launched by the world-famous skateboarder from Carlsbad -- also believes in and supports. A $5,000 donation from the foundation, along with community donations helped bring the project to life.

It's a community-based project that clearly has no problem bringing this community together.

"Now that this is here I'm gonna be here every day," one skater said.
