Pedestrian hit, killed by train in Midtown

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS/CBS 8) - Walking with headphones and focusing on a handheld device instead of where he was going may have caused the death of a 24-year-old man who was struck by a northbound Amtrak train in San Diego, a sheriff's deputy said Sunday.

The accident occurred at around 3 p.m. Saturday at the railroad crossing at 2136 W. Washington St., said Deputy Jeffrey Houser.

"A 24-year-old male was struck by a northbound Amtrak train while crossing the railroad tracks," Houser said. "Witnesses stated that the victim may have been wearing headphones and manipulating a handheld device. The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene."

Witnesses tell CBS News 8 they tried to alert the man of the oncoming train.

"I blew my horn and I was in the process of putting my window down to yell at him...and a group of people in the back yelled as well. It was pretty graphic," Reno Torres said.

The accident was under investigation by the sheriff's Coaster and Railroad Enforcement Unit, he said. Anyone with information about the incident was asked to call the sheriff's non-emergency line at (858) 565-5200.
