Crews work to repair power pole on SR-76

Posted: Updated:

PAUMA VALLEY (CNS) - State Route 76 east of Valley Center will be closed intermittently for 45 to 60 minutes at a time Monday morning while crews work to repair a power pole that was sheared off by a drunken driver, authorities said.

The driver, 21-year-old Steven Want of Pala, was uninjured in the crash and booked into the Vista jail on suspicion of drunken driving following Sunday's late-afternoon crash, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Jim Bettencourt.

Around 4 p.m. Sunday, Want was driving his 2003 Cadillac STS eastbound on state Route 76 when he veered to the right on a left-hand curve and plowed into the power pole, causing live wires to block both east and westbound lanes, Bettencourt said in a statement.

The crash prompted the closure of the highway in both directions about 100 yards east of Valley Center Road for roughly three hours and briefly knocked out electric service in the area. It also caused a small spot fire, but the fire was out by the time firefighters arrived, Cal Fire Capt. Kendall Bortisser said.
