ESCONDIDO (CBS 8) - We're hearing from an Escondido police officer, who is being called a hero after risking his life to rescue a driver from a burning vehicle.

It happened early Sunday morning.

Officer Joseph Putlowski says, when he arrived on the scene of a two-vehicle crash -- one of the cars was on fire, with a 21-year-old driver still inside.

He says there was really no time to think -- he just reached in and pulled the man out, as the flames grew higher and hotter by the second.

"My main concern was...either that vehicle is going to fully engulf in flames that would injure the occupant of the vehicle or myself," he said.

Many are calling his actions courageous but officer Putlowski sees it differently.

"This is my job. This is what I feel I'm expected to do," he said.

The driver of the car, who suffered injuries to his head, was later arrested on suspicion of DUI. Investigators believe he ran a red light.

Two other people in the second car suffered minor injuries.
