SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Fierce winds have been blowing across San Diego, hitting the East County particularly hard.

According the California Highway Patrol, officers were diverting traffic off the Interstate 8 at Willows Road in Alpine Wednesday morning. High profile vehicles were forced to turn around or park on the side of the mountain, because the wind gusts were too strong and dangerous.

The CHP also reported that further east on I-8 some big rigs overturned, making it too risky to allow high profile vehicles down that same path.

The wind also caused power outages affecting thousands of residents in pockets across the East County and mountain areas, such as Boulevard, Campo, Potrero Descanso, Mount Laguna and Pine Valley.

The intense winds have caused some damage elsewhere in the county. Along Kerney Villa Road near Miramar, a tree branch fell on a SUV with a family inside. It broke the whole front windshield. No injuries were reported.
