SDSU marks 50th anniversary of MLK speech

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - San Diego State is marking the 50th anniversary of the historic on-campus speech delivered by Martin Luther King, Jr.

On Wednesday, a new permanent plaque commemorating the 1964 appearance was unveiled at the Open Air Theater, where King delivered the address. Mementos and artifacts from King's visit that were recently uncovered were also on display.

Willie Horton was a student at SDSU when King visited San Diego. He shared his memories of King's influence.

"He knew how to say what others only knew how to think. He dared to say what others only dared to think," Horton said.

King's speech on May 29, 1964 urged all Americans to push for legislation to help counter racial prejudice, bigotry and intolerance.
