LAKESIDE (CBS 8) - Fire crews quickly gained control of a brush fire near homes and a small shopping center in Lakeside Thursday morning. At the same time, a Lakeside substation lost power possibly due to high winds.

The fire near the 7-Eleven at Lake Jennings Park Road and El Monte Road erupted shortly before 7 a.m., according to San Diego County sheriff's Lt. Rich Williams. There were no immediate evacuations, though the fire was burning on a hill behind some homes, he added.

Two dozen firefighters battled the blaze and quickly gained control of the flames, stopping the fire at four acres. A series of explosions, heard by residents, added to the chaos.

"Neighbors told me they heard a loud pop and the power went out and then the fire started," said Joshua.

"My heart is pounding," Jan Johnson added.

Johnson rushed to Lakeside, hoping her brother's house near Lake Jennings Park and El Monte Road wasn't in the line of fire. She saw it unfold on the news.

"I was going to walk down and gets the dogs out of here because it freaked me out."

Rekindling bad memories for Johnson after a fast-moving fire destroyed a neighbor's house years ago.

"It's so dry out here and the house next to my brother's burned to ground in the last fire," Johnson said.

At one point, El Monte Road and Lake Jennings Park Road were closed in both directions surrounding the fire. Traffic was diverted to an alternate route.

No injuries were reported and no structures were damaged.

San Diego Gas & Electric reported at one point that at least 9,500 of its Lakeside-area customers were without electricity during the height of the incident. As of 11:30 a.m., all but 84 customers had their power restored.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
