Power restored after runaway truck crash

Posted: Updated:
SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - San Diego Gas and Electric crews worked through the night to restore power to Redwood Village after a runaway truck slammed into several cars and a power pole, darkening hundreds of homes.

The truck crashed on Gayle Street, between Rock and Hughes streets, shortly before 1:30 p.m. Sunday, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

"My heart was pounding...devastated. I'm just thankful it sounds like no one was hurt," Cheryl Wagemann said.

When Cheryl Wagemann's delivery came Sunday afternoon, she got one heck of a story to go along with it.

"I looked out and noticed the truck started moving a little and I told the gentleman, 'they're leaving without you.' He said what? I said, your truck is rolling. He starts coming out the door," she said.

Their delivery truck was flying down Gayle Street, and leaving a path of destruction.

"The guy tried to grab the truck as if that could do anything. All of a sudden you hear pop pop pop," Wagemann said.

That pop was the electrical pole it took out and it was loud enough to get Adam Butner to run outside.

"I was sitting inside, watching TV, enjoying my bowl of cereal, I hear like gun shots like boom boom. I run outside and I see all the power lines shaking like crazy," he said.

Authorities say it's unclear what exactly happened. They're trying to figure out if a brake failed or if one was never set. Besides the car seat and power lines it took out, no one was hurt and no homes were badly damaged.

"Power is out the entire length of the top of the hill down to rock and will be probably for a good long time. They have to come and physically take the lines down, replace the pole, and then put the lines up," said Lee Swanson, San Diego Fire Department.

On a hot day - it took people's power - but left them all with something to talk about.

"Not a boring day, not a typical Sunday," Butner said.
