Police: Fallbrook assault did not happen on trail

Posted: Updated:

FALLBROOK (CNS) - A woman who reported that she was sexually assaulted by a stranger as she jogged on a pedestrian path in Fallbrook with her 2-year-old daughter in a stroller now says she knew her assailant and that she was attacked elsewhere, authorities announced Tuesday.

The assault near Lake Shore Park occurred April 23, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

"The investigation is still ongoing; however, there have been changes in the victim's account of the incident," sheriff's Lt. Jeff Duckworth said in a statement. "The assault did not take place on the trail, the alleged assailant did not jump from behind bushes, and he was not armed with a knife. The victim knew the suspect who resides out of state. This was not a stranger assault."

A person of interest has been identified in the case, he said, adding that the community is no longer in danger of an unidentified predator.
