Finding a furry friend

Posted: Updated:

Have you seen the ads for farmers and ranchers only dating websites and long for a little country life? Well, CBS News 8’s Larry Himmel has found a ranch that's for sale in Vista - one that could make you a million.

People find their destiny in unique ways. Lurlee Adams found her's on a hilltop in Vista, after her husband answered an ad in the Auto Club magazine 48 years ago.

“And it said that we could become millionaires. We're still trying, we didn't want the salesman to be a liar,” laughed Lurlee.

At first, she began raising chinchillas for fur, but soon fell in love with the furry rodents.

Now, Valley View Chinchilla Ranch, she only sells them as pets to good homes.

Although you can't let them just crawl around, because they'll chew through anything, Lurlee says that chinchillas are smart, odor free and make good pets.

“They are very clean and they cannot have fleas, their fur is too thick. You and I have one hair to a follicle, they have 75 to 100,” she explained.

Forty eight years later, at age 91, Lurlee is ready to sell the Valley View Chinchilla Ranch, so she can care for her 94-year-old husband, who no longer works here. Three times she's had a deal in place to sell and every time it's fallen through.

Even with help from caretaker, Jim. It's too much for her now and she can't just close the doors. She's got 400 residents.

“I've made a lot of people happy with chinchillas,” Lurlee said.

No she'd like to give someone else a chance to become a millionaire.
