BACKGROUND

CAMP PENDLETON (CBS 8) - Fire crews on Camp Pendleton Friday are tackling a third fire in the northwest area of the base.

The fire -- named the San Mateo Fire -- broke out near Interstate 5 and Basilone Road at about 11:30 a.m. All personnel in the base's 62 Area were directed to evacuate and head to Paige Fieldhouse via Christianitos Road, West, Interstate 5 or State Route 76, USMC officials said.

The commanding general of Camp Pendleton directed that all non-essential personnel be sent home at noon due to the spate of blazes tearing over the station.

The base has its own fire department, but is also getting help from Cal Fire. To help those on the ground, more than 20 military aircraft are making continued water drops.

Base officials say the weather conditions are like the rest of the county -- hot and dry. They know they're in for a long weekend.

"The fight continues all the time. Our focus is protectign property and lives. The fire crews are going to continue working their hardest until these fires are 100 percent contained, everyone can go to their homes and is safe," Lt Ryan Finnegan told CBS News 8.
