GoPro app brings video analysis to new, easy level

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Taking lessons from a 10-year-old can be humbling. Fortunately, the 10-year-old is a grizzled veteran with the GoPro app.

It's the latest in video analysis that can bring exponential improvement to an athlete in any sport.

"As a coach and as a dad I know my limits, the players have an attention span of about five seconds. Pull out the GoPro and app and all of a sudden they're engaging and it's a lot of fun," Carlsbad youth baseball coach Chris Lopez said.

The app allows your tablet to become the viewfinder of the GoPro camera.

"we needed to have something people could use to manipulate the camera without having to use the little menus, which are very difficult," GoPro Software Applications Manager Gene Higgs said.

More importantly, the app then allows you to record and playback what you have shot.

"And when the batter's done we take him out of the cage and provide instant feedback, which is a lot of fun for the boys," Lopez said.

"I think it's helped me because you can watch how you are swinging and you can see what you need to improve on," player Bryce said.

And considering Bryce's less-than-star student, there is a lot to improve on. The video doesn't lie, but it does its job, allowing me, and any other athlete, to improve.

Some of the footage used in this video report was shot using a GoPro camera.
