CHULA VISTA (CBS 8/CNS) - The father of a Hilltop High School ninth-grader was arrested Wednesday after the child allegedly brought a loaded handgun onto the campus, authorities reported.

Police say 36-year-old Zachariah Dow turned himself in Wednesday afternoon, and faces a charge of being a felon in possession of a gun. The teen, who was taken to a police station for questioning, is expected to be booked into Juvenile Hall, where he'll face felony charges.

An assistant principal at the Chula Vista secondary school called police about 11 a.m. to report that several students had seen a 14-year-old student displaying a handgun, Lt. Fritz Reber said.

"They claimed the suspect student ... made statements indicating that the gun was loaded and that he could potentially use (it) to shoot someone at school," Reber said.

Officers went to the boy's classroom, took him into custody without incident and found a loaded .44-caliber revolver in his backpack, the lieutenant said.

"Detectives are actively working the case and are intent on serving search warrants on locations related to the suspect," Reber said. "At this time it appears that the student acted alone, and there are no outstanding suspects."

Detectives searched the home and also found a .22-caliber handgun under the father's bed unsecured. Dow has been booked in the San Diego County jail where he faces felony child cruelty, felon possession of a firearm and ammunition and a misdemeanor charge involving providing access to a firearm.

CBS News 8 is not naming the juvenile suspect, but found out through his Facebook page that he likes several violent video games.
