Dog trainers educate public to help prevent attacks

Posted: Updated:
SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - It's National Dog Bite Prevention Week, and today the US Postal Service teamed up with a local dog training company to educate the public on how to prevent dog attacks.

Mail carriers here in San Diego County have experienced an increasing number of dog attacks over the past three years. On Wednesday, dog trainers from Sit Means Sit conducted dog safety training with local carriers and offered tips on how to prevent attacks.

"The main thing is for them to be aware of their surroundings. The second thing is to not underestimate the dog, the size of the dog, the breed of the dog or anything like that and the third thing is to use what's available to them to create a barrier or distraction to the dog, the most likely thing is the satchel that they carry the letters in," Tim McMillan of Sit Means Sit Dog Training said.

Their were 101 dog bites or attacks on letter carriers in the county last year.
