Teenager raising money from the rubble

CARLSBAD (CBS 8) - A Carlsbad teen is turning memories into much needed money for fire victims.

Sixteen-year-old Kaitlin Ming has transformed her family's garage in Carlsbad into a treasure chest of memories. Kaitlin calls them Rescued Memories. They were pulled from the rubble of three homes in her community that burned to the ground.

"They lost everything. Their house was totally destroyed. It was heartbreaking. So we are trying to raise $100,000 for every family," Kaitlin said.

So to raise the $300,000 total, Kaitlyn is now re-purposing these items with the blessing of all three families. Anyone who makes a donation to help these families rebuild will get a priceless gift in return

"I think if this was hanging in my own room, every time I looked at it, I would be reminded of the horrors that happened, and that even out of that, something beautiful came out of it too. It's really pretty to me," Kaitlin said.

Greg Sascha is one of the fire victims Kaitlin is helping, and he is especially grateful. After 30 years of living in this house, he says he fell on hard times about a year ago. His home was uninsured.

"Nothing you can do, but I'll just do the best to get over this, and with Kaitlin's help that would be a godsend," Greg said.

"We just are trying to raise as much money as we can," Kaitlin said.
