Pendleton Marine arrested after high-speed chase

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A Camp Pendleton Marine is in jail without bail Thursday morning, accused of ramming a California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer with his car during a chase.

The incident started Wednesday night when an officer says he tried to stop a black Camaro driving 100 miles per hour on southbound Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton.

The driver weaved in and out of traffic, reaching speeds of 140 miles per hour before exiting in Oceanside. He was trying to make a U-turn when he hit the officer head-on.

Officers tracked the driver, identified as 20-year-old Cal Rieger, back to Camp Pendleton. He eventually stopped and he and his passenger were taken into custody.

The CHP officer was not injured.

Rieger will be arraigned Friday for several charges, including evading authorities.
