CHULA VISTA (CBS 8) – More information is being revealed Thursday about the boy, who is accused of bringing a handgun to school in Chula Vista, his father and their difficult family background.

Police say Zachariah Dow, 36, bailed out of the San Diego County Jail and faces charges of being a felon in possession of a gun, felony child cruelty and misdemeanor charge involving providing access to a firearm.

CBS News 8 knocked on the front door of Dow's Chula Vista home on Hilltop Drive with no answer. The father of the Hilltop High School ninth-grader turned himself in Wednesday.

An assistant principal called police around 11 a.m. Wednesday after several students said the 14-year-old boy displayed a handgun on the campus. Officers went to the boy's classroom and found a loaded .44-caliber revolver in his backpack.

"They claimed the student made statements indicating that the gun was loaded and that he could potentially use (it) to shoot someone at school." Lt. Fritz Reber, with Chula Vista Police, said.

CBS News 8 is not naming the juvenile, but discovered on his Facebook page that he liked several violent video games. Detectives searched the home and also found a .22-caliber handgun under the father's bed.

New information has been revealed that indicates the boy's mother, Chere Rhodes, committed suicide in 2008 with a semi-automatic weapon. She was a former Penthouse Pet and girlfriend of the actor who played Jethro in the Beverly Hillbillies.

Rhodes was once married to Dow and court records show in September 2000, there was a felony case in Chula Vista along with a divorce and restraining order.

The teenage boy is in juvenile hall and faces a felony charge. This case is now in the hands of the District Attorney's Office.
