Local business thanks firefighters with $25K check

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Firefighters are being recognized for their efforts to protect life and property during the recent wildfires.

A local company in La Jolla says the raging wildfires hit close to home. They donated from the heart to San Diego's firefighters and rescue crews.

A $25,000 check was handed to the San Diego Fire Rescue Foundation. More than 100 employees of Provide-Commerce joined in a donation ceremony with firefighters in La Jolla.

Their CEO says about a dozen of their working families were evacuated during the devastating wildfires in San Diego County last week.

The fire chief says the donation is vital in providing technology, equipment and training for fire and rescue crews -- funds that help beyond the city's budget.

"Quite a few of our employees were impacted by the fires and we're so grateful for the work the firefighters and first responders did to save their homes," said Chris Shimojima, Provide-Commerce CEO.

"I feel a lot better today than last week trying to get my head around the incident. It is very humbling. I believe this is our biggest corporate donation to date," said Javier Mainar, San Diego Fire Chief.

Every dollar goes to improving the fire department on every level.

Kevin Rooney and his wife were evacuated from the wildfires last week and had to rush to Poinsettia Elementary School in Carlsbad to pick up his children last week. Somehow his house was safe when they returned two days later.

"We consider ourselves very fortunate the first responder team did an amazing job. I don't think words can express for everything they've done," Rooney said.
