Two new things to do in San Diego this weekend

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Grand opening celebrations were held Friday for two major exhibits at San Diego theme parks, just in time for the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

The $19.5 million Tull Family Tiger Trail at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park features a forested habitat with three yards for the park's six Sumatran tigers. The 5.2-acre exhibit includes rocks for climbing, ponds for swimming, deadwood trees to use as scratching posts and tall grasses for catnaps.

The zoo says fewer than 350 Sumatran tigers remain in the wild, and their numbers continue to dwindle.

The trail is named for Thomas and Alba Tull, who donated $9 million for the project. Thomas Tull is best known for producing the "Dark Knight" films.

At Legoland California, the "Legends of Chima" water park is three acres of wet play areas for youth. The facility's second water park features a 250,000-gallon wave pool, a lion arch created out of 260,000 Lego bricks and a slide through the jaws of a massive Lego crocodile.

The Carlsbad theme park brought out star power for its grand opening celebration, with actresses Mayim Bialik, Gena Nolin and Anne Heche, and Padres players Seth Smith, Chase Headley, Cameron Maybin, Rene Rivera, Everth Cabrera, Huston Street and Ian Kennedy.

The exhibits at both theme parks will open to the general public on Saturday.

If you've ever been stuck sitting in traffic, you've probably seen motorcyclists cutting through lanes and whizzing by. It's a move called lane-splitting, and while it's potentially dangerous, it's perfectly legal.
