City officials unveil new lifeguard vehicles

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - City officials got an early start on summer by unveiling a new fleet of lifeguard vehicles and promoting water safety.

The City of San Diego has partnered with Toyota for "Water Safety Days" at the beaches this summer. Among the tools that will help lifeguards keep residents and tourists safe are 34 brand new Toyota lifeguard vehicles.

"Our lifeguards do thousands of rescues every summer, not only rescues here at the beach, but cliff rescues. These trucks, these vehicles are important and so it's a great example of working smarter, and most importantly, giving our men and women who are lifeguards the tools that they need to save lives and be successful," a lifeguard spokesperson said.

Last year, lifeguards performed nearly 5,300 water rescues at city beaches.
