Community organizes donation drive for fire victims

Posted: Updated:
SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - It's been just over a week since the wildfires that devastated many communities broke out. Since then, many San Diegans have been looking for ways help the families who lost everything.

Saturday, a donation drive was held in San Marcos not too far from the Cocos Fire.

"Most of the people in Harmony Grove did not have home owner insurance so they literally lost everything," said donation coordinator Deborah Farris.

Volunteers with close ties to those who lost it all have started a movement. The idea to help a group of families in Harmony Grove has now grown to assisting as many wildfire victims as possible.

"Generally when people evacuate they only grab important papers and pictures but then you don't have any clothes and you end up wearing the same clothes for weeks on end," Farris said.

Clothes, household items and anything else a family would need to rebuild are being collected at StaxUP Storage in San Marcos and they still need more.

Run purely by volunteers who got tired of sitting around and feeling helpless -- it's the community's way of saying we care.

"I know when people come to pick up things they are going to be happy just to know that we're all in this together it's a joyful sense of purpose," Farris said.

Neighbors helping neighbors because you never know when you might be in next.

"If the winds had changed it would have been my house and I would hope somebody would be out there to reach out for me," said one volunteer.

If you would like to volunteer your time or donate you can go to StaxUP Storage at 458 E Mission Road in San Marcos any day between now and June 1 from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. You can also connect with the organizers through Facebook at Escondido Friends.
