Four hurt in DUI crash following hit-and-run

Posted: Updated:
NORTH PARK (CNS/CBS 8) - A series of crashes in North Park left four people injured, and two drivers facing drunken driving charges, police said Monday.

Around 11:40 p.m. Sunday, a 42-year-old suspected drunken driver struck two parked cars in a parking lot near Park Boulevard and University Avenue, according to San Diego police Officer David Stafford.

As he was then attempting to drive away, he ran a red light at Park Boulevard and University Avenue and struck a moving vehicle, the officer said.

"I tried to stop him from doing what he was doing... He was dazed, clearly drunk," witness Christopher Hickson said.

Ironically, the second motorist was also drunk, Stafford said. That driver suffered a broken neck, but his injuries were not considered life-threatening, and his passenger was also expected to survive, Stafford said.

Both he and his passenger were taken to a hospital.

The original driver, 42 years old, was arrested for suspicion of hit and run and felony drunken driving. The man he hit will also face drunken driving charges, Stafford said.
