SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - More than 400 people attended a candlelight vigil at UC San Diego to remember the six UC Santa Barbara students who were either shot or stabbed to death Friday night.

Among the mourners at UC San Diego were friends who personally knew one of the victims, Michael Martinez.

"He was kind hearted and genuine kid,” said UCSB alumnus Danny Westcott.

He and Michael Lieziert were in Isla Vista’s chapter for the Surfrider Foundation with Martinez in 2013.

Other UCSB alumni living in San Diego attended the vigil to come together as one.

“We are all supporting one cause, we are all supporting UC's, we are on all in this together,” said UCSB alumnus Melodie Tao.

Organizers of the vigil are hoping this will also bring awareness.

“In times like these it is invaluable to demonstrate our common humanity. What many are facing is not only sadness but shock and confusion,” said UC San Diego student Mina Nilchian.

Investigators found the suspected killer, Elliot Rodger, posted a YouTube video and wrote a manifesto about his hatred for women and blamed men.

“Hatred for women affects everyone,” said Nilchian.

Vigils are being held across UC campuses this week.
