Green and on-the-go: Bike to Work Day in San Diego

Posted: Updated:
SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Friday was Bike to Work Day in San Diego.

About 8,000 people ditched their car keys for their bicycles. The event was supposed to happen earlier this month, but had to be rescheduled due to the wildfires.

Riding though fog Friday, KFMB-TV employee and cyclist Kurt Campbell is trying to stand out with a bright yellow jersey and new helmet made by Torch.

"It's got a tail light, and it's got a headlight. It's not made for shining on the road… it's for being seen by traffic," Campbell said.

Kurt has been riding his bike safely to work for 10 years, with only one crash.

"The only part I remember is waking up in the ambulance," he said.

A driver pulled out in front of him. The t-bone crash laid him up for seven months.

Providing safer routes for cyclists is a priority for city and county leaders. Bike loops and sharrows re leading the way.

Bike to Work Day is an opportunity for new cyclists to give it a spin and grab some freebies. Not only is cycling good for your health and the environment, but you can cruise by traffic jams during a tough commute.

"I know what it feels like to be stuck in traffic, so just to keep moving, it feels good," Campbell said.

As much as Campbell loves to make good time, these days he's a more defensive cyclist, thanks to a new helmet and attitude.

"I was probably a hot shot back then, and I learned my lesson that day, that's for darn sure," he said.

If you've ever been stuck sitting in traffic, you've probably seen motorcyclists cutting through lanes and whizzing by. It's a move called lane-splitting, and while it's potentially dangerous, it's perfectly legal.
