Oldest runner in marathon sets new record

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – A 91-year-old runner crossed the finish line in Sunday's Rock 'n' Roll Marathon, setting a new record.

Harriette Thompson crossed the finish line in just over seven hours, making her the second oldest marathon finisher in U.S. history, and a new record holder in her age group.

"I thought around mile 17 that I was going to have to ask for help, but eventually I got my energy back and I'm just as surprised as everybody else, that I finished," Thompson said.

Thompson, who lives in North Carolina, says she started her running career at the age of 76, and has completed 15 marathons, all in San Diego.
