Emergency response times improving in South Bay

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Emergency response times in the South Bay are improving thanks to the addition of a new ambulance.

As part of a contract extension with the City of San Diego, Rural Metro added a fourth unit to serve border neighborhoods in San Ysidro and Otay Mesa.

Mayor Kevin Faulconer says since the ambulance went into service last month, the average response time is about seven minutes -- a minute faster than it was the year before.

"It may seem like a small change, but as the first month has shown us, it can make a world of difference. This is a big step for improving the quality of life for all of our South Bay neighbors," Faulconer said.

The Rural Metro deal was extended for one year.
