Sharp Memorial inaugural living donors celebration

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Sharp Memorial Hospital held its first ever salute to living donors.

Two dozen San Diegans who donated in 2013 were honored at Wednesday night's celebration, emceed by CBS News 8's Marcella Lee. Among the honorees were Charles and Alexis Wesley, the first husband and wife in the nation to each donate a kidney to a stranger

"It's a tremendously meaningful experience to be able to donate your kidney to someone, and we're both just so thankful we got the opportunity to do so and we're excited to be here," Charles Wesley said.

Donors describe the experience of saving someone's life by donating a kidney as a fulfilling experience.

Nationwide there are more than 100,000 people who need a kidney transplant.
