Boy dies, uncle on life support after ocean rescue

SOLANA BEACH (CBS 8) - Students at Santa Fe Christian School in Solana Beach are rallying around the family of a 17-year-old boy from Guatemala who died four days after being carried out by a rip current at Moonlight Beach.

"We saw one person floating who was unconscious... We swam over... And he wasn't moving," Kerryanne North said.

Kerryanne North and her classmates were holding a school party at the beach last Thursday when they spotted 17-year-old Gerardo Cruz-Manuel and his 38-year-old uncle Vasilio Manuel-Tomas floating in the water.

They helped pull both victims from the water and alerted lifeguards.

Kerryanne's mother says she feels for Gerardo's mother who never got to say goodbye.

"She sent him up here to have a chance at a better life -- and he was only here for three days -- when he passed away -- so I think any mother can feel the pain in that... And then not be able to come and be here with him," Julianne North said.

Gerardo's uncle is in a coma on life support.

A fund has been created to raise money to send Gerardo's body back to Guatemala and help the family.
