SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A memorial will be held Friday for a man killed by a suicidal driver on state Route 67 in Lakeside last week.
Doug Menegos, 49, died when Trista Stier drove the wrong way and crashed head-on into his truck.
Menegos, an electrician, was driving home from work on SR-67 when the California Highway Patrol says 29-year-old Trista Stier of Jamul slammed into him. Both Stier and Menegos were killed.
"She was 29-years old, still pretty much a baby. She had her whole life ahead of her. So for whatever tragic reason she decided to take her life, it's senseless to me," brother Nick Menegos said.
Yet, the Menegos family is finding the compassion to pray for Stier's family's loss, instead of succumbing to hate.
"Yeah I mean it's not their fault. They're suffering and grieving just like we are," Nick said.
Doug was married to his high school sweetheart Lisa.
"If everybody could have a relationship like that, nobody would get a divorce. They got along really good, married for 23 years," Nick said.
Suddenly, that marriage is over, and now Lisa will have to care for their two children -- 20-year-old Kara and 17-year-old Jacob -- on one salary. Thankfully the community has donated $34,000 and counting.
"Without this money, they could lose their house and all this other stuff. It's one of those things I think the good lord is making a good thing out of it," Nick said.
Nick Menegos is organizing a fundraiser Friday night in El Cajon at the Downtown Café and promenade, and he hopes all of San Diego can come to celebrate his brother's life.
"You know, he's a hometown boy and… stepping up to the plate and helping his family out… I think that's a great thing," Nick said.
