New "pocket park" opens in East Village

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A recently constructed mini-park in the East Village neighborhood opened to the public Sunday.

City Council President Todd Gloria was on hand, along with other city and business leaders and neighborhood residents, during the opening ceremony for the small "pocket park" at 13th Avenue and J Street

Pocket parks, which are open to the public, are often created on a single vacant building lot or on small, irregular pieces of land.

The new East Village park was built on the site of an underused parking lot, and was constructed between Downtown San Diego Partnership, property owner HP Investors, Downtown architecture and design firm RAD Lab and the East Village Association.

HP Investors financed the design with input from the East Village Association, according to the Downtown San Diego Partnership, which will oversee the location.

Officials with the Downtown San Diego Partnership said the park would add an important amenity to the growing East Village.

The opening event featured, music, games and a Padres ticket giveaway.
