Plan to help with parking at new border crossing

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The San Ysidro Smart Border Coalition unveiled a proposal Monday to help with parking at the new Virginia Avenue pedestrian crossing.

The plan would use land from an existing business to build a new parking lot. That lot would service the estimated 20,000 pedestrians that are expected to use the crossing every day.

Businesses in the area are worried that, without the new parking lot, cars would clog roads and block the entrances to shops and restaurants.

Supporters of the plan say it's a win-win for everyone involved.

"It keeps everything online, it keeps things actually under budget because it's three acres they don't have to acquire, and it provides the community with pieces that are critical to our survival in parking, mobility and movement," Jason Wells of the San Ysidro Chamber of Commerce said.

The parking plan still has to be approved. Construction on the border crossing itself is scheduled to be completed in spring of 2016.
