Man with links to NBA shot dead in Chula Vista

CHULA VISTA (CBS 8) - A murder investigation is underway in Chula Vista, where a 27-year-old man was shot dead while a little girl slept in the next room.

“I said this cannot possibly be my child, please Lord no. Do not let this child be my child, do not,” said Desiree McGuire the victim’s mother.

Desiree McGuire has been reeling over the discovery that the victim she has been hearing about all morning on the news -- who was shot and killed at 520 E. H Street in the gated Beacon Cove Apartments Thursday -- was her own son.

"When I got there that's when I realized it was him,” Desiree McGuire said.

Police say at about 12:30 a.m. Thursday, McGuire was on the couch and his live-in girlfriend’s five-year-old daughter was asleep in a bedroom. Two friends were playing cards at a table when the door opened and shots were fired. A bullet hit McGuire in the head.

Police say his two friends escaped through a back window and called for help.

Officers spent all morning interviewing McGuire’s friends, talking to neighbors and gathering evidence. Investigators say they don't know if McGuire was the intended target.

McGuire’s son, 27-year-old Jamel McGuire whose nickname was "Mel Mel," was an aspiring pro basketball player who had previously played for San Diego City College and Cal State Fullerton. He is also the younger brother of 28-year-old former NBA player Dominic McGuire.

McGuire says he was her youngest son, her baby. The last time she saw him was over the weekend for a family BBQ.

"This is a nightmare, a mother’s worst nightmare,” she said. "This is when you want the death penalty in California to be there."

The five-year-old was reportedly unharmed during the shooting, according to Chula Vista police. She was taken to the Polinski Children's Center and was being held until her parents could be notified.
