Public speaks about cost of closing San Onofre

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The first of three public meetings regarding a proposal tied to the shutdown of the San Onofre nuclear power plant was held Friday.

The California Public Utility Commission invited the public to voice their opinions about the proposal, which would make customers of Southern California Edison and San Diego Gas and Electric responsible for $3.3 billion in costs for replacement power.

Opponents of the proposal say the cost shouldn't become the burden of ratepayers.

"The advocates for the rate payers are trying to do our best to keep this taxation without representation down because they're just ripping us off," Ray Lutz of Citizens Oversight said.

The utility companies originally wanted $4.7 billion from ratepayers, but lowered the amount due to costs associated with defective steam generators at the plant.
