Team 'Race Across America' kicks off in Oceanside

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The team challenge of the grueling "Race Across America" is now underway.

Saturday, teams of cyclists left Oceanside. The race is considered the world's toughest bike ride.

The ultra-endurance trek stretches 3,000 miles from the Pacific Ocean to Annapolis, Maryland and it must be finished in less than 12 days.

Teams ride for charity, including a group from New York who is raising money for the troops.

"We're really nervous, but we're going to give it our all, do our best. You know we're riding for a cause that's greater than ourselves. So we're really excited to do this. It's the least we can do for our troops," said Scott Cohen.

Among the team riders who left Saturday is Pippa Middleton -- the sister of Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge.
