How should San Diego honor one of its greats?

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - One day after the death of Padres great Tony Gwynn, the city and team are working out the details for a public memorial. But what should that tribute involve, and where should it be held?

Donna Clark's father recently died of the same cancer Tony Gwynn battled

"You both fought the good fight. Blessings Tony, enjoy your paradise," Donna said.

As Clark and Gwynn's other faithful fans find their own ways to say goodbye, they wait for an announcement from the team on plans for a public celebration of life event to honor the baseball legend.

But many fans say there's a more fitting place than Petco Park.

"I think it should be at Qualcomm, that's where he made his name," one fan said.

"That's where he retired, that's where he got his most of his hits. That's where he became Mr. Padre," another fan said.

Some are hoping organizers will also give Gwynn's loyal fans a chance to share their great memories at the mic too.

"Allow for more than just the politicians, because he was ours. He helped a lot of people," a fan said.

Whatever it is the Padres are planning, and wherever it will be held, fans say they will be there to say one final farewell to number 19.

"Thanks to your family for sharing you with us. San Diego was so fortunate," Donna said.

"I think people in the city want some kind of closure. I think that's why all of this… they just want some type of closure, knowing that things change, things move on, but we don't forget," a fan said.

As for the city's involvement in planning a memorial for Tony Gwynn, a spokesperson for Mayor Kevin Faulconer says the Padres are in charge of coordinating the event, but the mayor's office is in communication with the team.
