Prosecutor: Man accused of stabbing girlfriend died in custody

Posted: Updated:

CHULA VISTA (CNS) - An ex-con charged with attempted murder for allegedly stabbing his 21-year-old girlfriend in Chula Vista after she admitted being unfaithful died while in custody, a prosecutor revealed Wednesday.

Brandon Lee Mason died May 2, according to Deputy District Attorney Mary Loeb, who presented a judge with Mason's death certificate on the day the defendant's preliminary hearing was to go forward.

No other details were released surrounding Mason's death.

Mason, who was 29, was arrested near the Vons grocery store on Eastlake Parkway about 7:20 a.m. on March 11. He had allegedly attacked his girlfriend while she showered in her apartment at 244 Palomar St. about 12:45 that morning.

Neighbors rushed to the naked woman's aid after hearing her scream. The woman said that just prior to the stabbing, she confessed to her boyfriend about her infidelity, police said.

One of the neighbors who came to her aid, Leonardo Becerra, said he was a National Guard medic and used his emergency first-aid kit to help slow the woman's bleeding before paramedics arrived. She was stabbed in the chest and underwent surgery.

Mason, who had been to prison three times, had faced 30 years in prison if convicted.
