Surf tested following Point Loma sewage spill

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A sewage spill fouled a Point Loma-area beach Tuesday.

The overflow of wastewater at Cordova and Ladera streets was reported shortly before 8 a.m., according to the county Department of Environmental Health. Crews were able to get the problem under control in less than a half-hour.

About 1,300 gallons of sewage escaped the system and entered a storm drain at the corner of Sunset Cliffs Boulevard, and roughly 465 gallons made it onto the nearby shoreline.

Signs warning of contamination hazards were posted in the area and will remain in place until follow-up testing deems the surf there safe again for recreational use, the DEH advised.
