Hammond's Gourmet Ice Cream: Island flavors in North Park

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - An open and airy space that through the past 79 years has been a grocery, a thrift shop and a shoe store, has joined the North Park renaissance as Hammond's Gourmet Ice Cream.

"The ice cream comes from the big island in Hawaii. It's made there," Trang Hammond said. "It's super premium, which means it has 18 percent butter fat and very low air infused in the process. Very rich and dense."

So why would three North Park residents open a Hawaiian gourmet ice cream shop on University Avenue?

"We love the area. North Park needed an ice cream shop. We love ice cream, so here we are," Trang said.

From its sundae cup chandelier to its ceiling of open beams, Hammond's is here to fill your tropical dreams.

"They have a lot of shops in Hawaii, but none in California, none in San Diego. So this is the only place, you can get this ice cream in a scoop shop," Trang said.

Their lush flavors are a litany of creamy delights.

"We have really good interesting flavors. Ginger cream, that's a big hit. We've got lychee cream, we offer azuki bean, which is a red bean, poha berry, which is native to Hawaii," Trang said.

And they're crazy about their Kona coffees.

"We have so many varieties of that. One of the other popular ones are chocolate, coconut macadamia nut," Trang said.

So many choices, such little time that Hammond's gourmet offers ice cream flights.

"You can get a flight of three, four, five or six," Trang said.

Hammond's Gourmet Ice Cream is an addictive addition to North Park's amazing renaissance.

"I'm a neighbor. I live here. I walk by here all the time. I'm glad to see this place is here," a customer said.

Hammond's softly opened just two weeks ago, but North Park is already getting the scoop.
