SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – A woman is dead and a man is in custody, following a hit-and-run accident in downtown on Interstate 5 early Thursday morning.
The woman, who is believed to be homeless, was hit and killed just after midnight in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5, north of the 163 connector. The driver of a black Ford Focus hit and killed the woman and kept driving. Officers say the victim was dead when they arrived.
Originally the California Highway Patrol thought they were searching for a black Dodge Charger, but it was later revealed that the vehicle involved actually was a black Ford Focus.
The CHP says that the driver called them Thursday morning to report he'd been involved in a crash. They investigated the call and then arrested 32-year-old Sandro Garcia at his home.
Two southbound lanes were temporarily closed from First Avenue to SR-163, along with the connector road to the highway. All lanes were reopened just after 2 a.m.
Garcia will be arraigned Monday. The identity of the victim has not been released.
