4 detained after vehicle abandoned at Naval Base Coronado main gate

CORONADO (CNS) - Four people were detained Thursday after the driver of a pickup truck abandoned the vehicle in a line to enter Naval Base Coronado for unknown reasons and ran into the adjacent neighborhood.

The motorist was a few vehicles back from the main gate of the station when he bolted about 1:30 p.m., authorities said.

Officers took him into custody a short time later several blocks away, in the 1000 block of Third Street, police Cmdr. Laszlo Waczek said. They also detained another man, a teenage boy and a woman who were believed to be associates of the driver.

The suspects were being questioned, Waczek said. It was unclear if they would be booked on suspicion of any offenses.

It was unknown why the driver abandoned the vehicle, though he might have simply "taken a wrong turn" and inadvertently wound up in line to enter the military base, Waczek said.

Navy personnel shut down the entrance while screening the pickup truck to make sure it did not contain anything dangerous.
