Hanna's Gourmet Catering: A hidden gourmet gem

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - There is a flame that sears this Normal Heights kitchen, not unlike the fire the burns in the heart of East African native Hanna Tesfamichael. It is her mission to bring global cuisine to her gourmet cafe.

"We decided we'd start this world tour menu, which is a very international menu from all over the world," she said.

The globetrotting menu makes Hanna's Gourmet Catering unique.

"I was able to change every week, without getting bored making a small menu," she said.

Hanna, a self-taught cook, started catering in 2001, but moved to her Adams Avenue storefront, three years ago.

"It wasn't supposed to be a restaurant. It was supposed to be a take-out for catering and a take-out lunch," Hanna said.

But her faithful customers demanded more. So Hanna's Gourmet is open for lunch and dinner Wednesday through Sunday. A trip through Hanna's kitchen is a trip around the world. Entrees can come from anywhere.

"French, Morocco, India," Hanna said.

On weekends, Hanna's gourmet serves brunch with a flair. And Hanna, who makes her own desserts, turns a carrot cake into a work of art. It's all part of her culinary mission.

"To introduce people to new things," she said.

It's a passion that can't be extinguished, and should be experienced.
