Police dog wounded in City Heights standoff

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A police dog is recovering after it was cut by a suicidal man in City Heights early Friday morning.

The unidentified man, who was armed with a knife, had been holed up alone in the 3800 block of Estrella Avenue near University Avenue since about 8:45 p.m. Thursday, according to San Diego police.

The suspect was eventually taken into custody with the help of  the police dog, named Mirko, shortly after 5:30 a.m. Friday when the dog was cut on one leg.

Police K-9s are trained to respond to aggression, so in this case, Mirko responded by biting the suspect and sending him to the hospital. His condition was not available.

Mirko is not expected to miss any time away from work.
