Injured hiker found on Chula Vista trail later dies

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A hiker who collapsed after having a medical emergency on a Chula Vista trail died at a hospital, authorities said Sunday.

The man, who authorities said was between 40 and 45 years old, was hiking with at least one other person near the intersection of Coastal Hills Drive and Butterfly Court on Saturday morning at 10:40 when he collapsed and hit his head on a rock, a Chula Vista police official said. The man was flown via Life Flight helicopter to a hospital where he later died.

The police official did not know the exact injury the man had suffered but said it was either a heart attack or a stroke. He called the head injury from the fall a secondary injury.

Others hikers on the trail saw the man fall and performed CPR to help resuscitate him, the official said. The hikers succeeded in finding the man's pulse before Life Flight arrived.
