San Diego police remained tight-lipped Sunday about motives or other details surrounding the arrest of a suspect in three Christmas-season murders that rocked San Diego.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The man arrested in connection with the murders of two brothers and a young woman has been taken to a local hospital.

Carlo Mercado, 29, was arrested Friday night in Mira Mesa in the deaths of Salvatore and Gianni Belvedere and Ilona Flint.

We still don't know what Carlo Mercado looks like but a jail clerk tells us the man who is accused of killing three people last December was taken to the hospital overnight -- the question is why? We asked his attorney but haven't heard back yet.

This comes less than 24 hours after the victims family held a news conference to announce the arrest of 29-year-old Mercado.

"My family received a phone call from the San Diego Police Department requesting an immediate meeting at our house. They didn't state the nature of their visit, the detectives arrived shortly after," said Antoinette Belvedere.

What came next was news they have been desperate to hear for six months.

"The detectives told us an arrest had been made for all three murders. Upon hearing this news our family was overcome with emotion. And relieved at the same time," Antoinette Belvedere said.

Mercado faces three first degree murder charges for each of his alleged victims. Salvatore Belvedere and Ilona Flint died after they were shot on Christmas Eve outside of Macy's at the Mission Valley Mall. About three weeks later, authorities found the body of 24-year-old Gianni Belvedere 100 miles away in a Riverside parking lot.

"Our families want to extend our deepest appreciation and thanks to the men and women of the San Diego Police Department," Antoinette Belvedere said.

We have learned Mercado is no stranger to the law. His attorney told us last month he plead guilty to a felony possession of a rifle charge and was supposed to be sentenced in July. Even though there has been an arrest, many questions still remain -- did Mercado know the victims and what about a possible motive?

The victim’s family is hoping to learn more soon.

"We're holding up. It's a sense of relief to get this info that someone's been caught....We just got the news so we're just still processing everything," Antoinette Belvedere said.

Mercado is set to make his first court appearance on Wednesday.
