Students connect with ISS astronauts

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - It's the next best thing to actually going up in space. A group of local school kids at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center are Skyping with astronauts working and living at the International Space Station.

This was an out-of-this-world opportunity -- nearly 200 local students got to chat live with astronauts in space as they work on board the ISS. It's the first time this has happened in San Diego.

Participating astronauts Steve Swanson and Reid Wiseman got to demonstrate science, engineering and math concepts in ways that are impossible on Earth.

This is all part of a NASA-sponsored campaign called Destination Station. It educates communities about activities performed on the International Space Station and shows folks the impact the station has on our everyday lives.

The exhibit will be here from July 12 to Sept. 2, and NASA astronauts will be in San Diego for a series of events from July 13 to 20.
