SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Mr. Padre's memorial statue at Petco Park is surrounded by balloons, pictures and thank you cards Friday morning. This following a tribute to Tony Gwynn Thursday night at Petco Park.

The baseball legend was honored by local leaders, Hall of Famers and Padres past and present who all shared their memories of Mr. Padre at the public memorial.

More than 23,000 San Diegans packed the park to say goodbye during the tribute which started at 7:19 p.m. to remember Number 19.

"On behalf of all the Gwynn family thank you. He was an amazing man and a father. He gave so much to San Diego," said Anisha Gwynn Jones, Tony's daughter.

Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson and former teammates, such as Trevor Hoffman also remembered the legend.

"It was always thank you. He was always so humble. We are the ones who are thankful. Amen," Hoffman said.

"Boy did he love his family. Whenever he talked about them he lit up like the sun. Maybe it's because I didn't have a dad. He would've been a great dad to have," former teammate Damian Jackson said.

It was a bittersweet memorial with a feeling of sadness mixed with celebration for a life well lived with an unforgettable laugh. It drew thousands to tears.

Several local leaders also attended Gwynn's ceremony. County Supervisor Ron Roberts reflected on how the legend worked tirelessly to achieve success on and off the field.

San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer spoke about how much Gwynn meant to the city, saying Mr. Padre represented the best of San Diego.

"He brought us to new heights on and off the field. He was the best this city had to offer and Gwynn made us proud," Mayor Faulconer said.

During the memorial, fans were given a memorial tribute pamphlet that said: "If you work hard, good things will happen" which was a front cover quote by his father, Charles Gwynn, Sr.
